Goodbye 2022, Hello 2023: Behind-the-Scenes Moments of Katy Sergent Photography
Goodbye, 2022…
Wow, guys! It’s been an incredible year, to say the least, and I can’t believe a new one is just around the corner!
At the end of every year, I tend to get a bit sentimental and emotional looking back and thinking of all of the amazing things accomplished, places traveled to, new people met, and memories made. This year was no exception! 2022 has been a bit of a rollercoaster— definitely been one of the busiest but also most rewarding years in my business yet. All in all, I’m just so incredibly grateful.
Out of curiosity, I ran some numbers and tallied up some work facts from 2022:
I traveled 6,185 miles (for work) and had weddings/sessions in 5 different states photographed: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland!
I photographed 18 weddings, 18 engagement/couple’s sessions, 8 branding sessions, 2 bridal sessions, and 2 senior sessions!
I met/photographed 2 celebrities— GUY FIERI and pro golfer, SCOTT STALLINGS.
I did not take the time to tally up how many images I took this year, but I’d estimate it would be at LEAST 70,000 images (usually an average of 3,000 images [from just me] per wedding, plus an average of 1,000 per engagement.. not to mention branding and the other sessions…) SHEW!
Shot a bunch of product/branding photography for my very first outdoor lifestyle/apparel company, Hunt Lift Eat, and have a continued relationship with the whole team. I even taught a small, virtual, photography workshop for their team members! Helping shape their brand and get out of my box a bit has been so rewarding for my outdoors-loving heart.
Invested in a whole new flash lighting setup to use for receptions and it has been so helpful!
Here are also a few non-work-related memories:
Won my Fantasy Football league and got my team name, Here Comes Treble (shout out to my fellow Office fans), on the trophy!
Traveled to California to visit my best friend, which is always a good time and an amazing experience each year.
Took the leap and bought my very first new-to-me car, a Toyota Rav4, and absolutely love it.
Got over my gym fear and got a membership to a local gym. Thanks to Hunt Lift Eat, I’ve fallen in love with weightlifting and can’t wait to continue to get stronger and get some PR’s in deadlifting, squats, and bench press.
Got back into reading and read 5 books in 2022— including Where the Crawdads Sing and the 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo— highly recommend both!
As I’ve been editing my weddings, I’ve been collecting some funny and great behind-the-scenes photos that my second shooters have so lovingly captured for me! Not only am I thankful that they captured these moments but also thankful for their help in general! My second shooters help the day run so smoothly and often capture things that I cannot because I can’t be in two places at once— so extra thanks to the hardworking and amazing second shooters that I’ve had the pleasure of working with this year!
Without further a-do, please enjoy this little behind-the-scenes/year recap!
Oh- also- I wish I had some behind-the-scenes from every wedding, but sometimes we get a bit busy or caught up doing our jobs that we don’t think to capture any, so if you’re a past bride or groom skimming through and don’t see any from your day, it’s nothing personal, hehe!
Cheers to 2023!
Kicked off the year with Katie and Aaron’s wedding at Sugar Hollow in January! Covid was running rampant so we masked up for safety!
In February, I flew to Napa Valley to visit my best friend for her birthday! Of course, when in Napa, do the wine tastings!
Went hiking in California with my best friend-- the mountains are different than the Appalachians but oh so beautiful!
Oh- and more wine tastings/cheese pairings!
In April, my best friend came to visit ME for MY birthday and I took her hiking here in Johnson City! We love Buffalo Mountain!
Had a session in Knoxville and had to get a permit-- I'm forever "Kathy," haha! (No shade to any Kathy's out there, it's just not me, I'm definitely a "Katy"!)
April kicked off my Spring wedding season-- traveled to Nashville for Leanne and Brian's wedding!
Always creeping in and around bushes during special moments like the First Look.
The best way to explain a pose is to do it and model it yourself!
Holding champagne for the groom while he ran to get somehing, so Leanne and I decided to cheers!
Walking poses are one of my favorites!
Wedding party time-- "Please scooch this way-- come in close, everyone!"
You'll quickly find that I love my jumpsuit/chaco wedding attire combo.
Hachland Hill is probably one of my all-time favorite venues that I've photographed-- gorgeous at every part of the property.
Bridal portraits with Leanne! Isn't she stunning?!
It wouldn't be a behind-the-scenes blog without some Wobble action.
My last wedding in April, I traveled to Durham to photograph Vania and Ngan's wedding at Duke Gardens! It was a dream come true!
Casie was my amazing second shooter and she was fantastic at tossing Vania's veil for shots!
In May, I took the leap and bought my new adventure car-- Ridge the Rav4:
a 2019 Adventure model Toyota Rav4, complete with sunroof! I've worked really hard the past few years towards this goal. I have never cried AND laughed so much in one sitting than I did at the dealership. What a rollercoaster, but ultimately my biggest (and happiest) investment yet.
My first adventure in the Rav4:
A new location for Lyndsey and Darren’s engagement session- complete with mountains, rainbows, a thunderstorm threat in the distance, and of course a dirt road. A recipe for magic.
A new favorite spot in Virginia- can't wait to go back and go hiking!
The thunderstorm in the distance made for such a dramatic backdrop.
Air BNB Views:
Stayed at the cutest Air BNB in Gatlinburg for Alex and Sean’s intimate wedding in the mountains.
The views were breathtaking...
...and came with visitors...
Part of Alex's bouquet somehow got stuck in her hair- so Katy to the rescue! Took a minute but we got it!
After a short trip to Gatlinburg, my next wedding was at Sugar Hollow Retreat to celebrate Lauren and Nate!
Jared is a fellow photographer in the area and has helped me on many weddings these past two years!
Not only is Jared an awesome photographer, but also very kind, professional, helpful, and a wonderful friend!
We're all thumbs up here!
Testing reception lighting- and more thumbs up...
Testing sparkler exit lighting... and even more thumbs up! Ha!
Next up: Sophia and Jon's wedding at the Parker Mill in Whittier, NC!
Had to fuel up before the wedding day with a big dose of caffeine!
Invitation and detail time! The cement in the pavilion was so pretty and made for the perfect backdrop for an invitation flatlay and ring shots!
How we set up a first look- position and coach the groom, then get the bride!
Yes, I will awkwardly be all-up-in your dress to fluff it and position it for the photo!
And I'll also carry it while we walk to different locations! Gotta save the train!
Always fluffing dresses!
The ceremony location was probably one of the hardest I've had to maneauver:
but it’s totally okay- we figured it out and rocked it!
Taking in the view from the Parker Mill's mountaintop platform for bride and groom portraits!
More dress fluffing and that oh-so perfect golden hour. What dreams are made of!
I always love seeing how couples use their engagement photos!
Sophia and Jon had one of theirs printed on canvas and brought it to display at the wedding!
The Macarena is making a comeback- just sayin!
I had one wedding in June before my summer break: Taylor and Dana's wedding at Meadowview Conference Center!
These two were so sweet and fun to work with!
Summer brought a little bit of a break, which is always welcomed! I made time for branding projects and second-shooting!
My friend Renita graduated from ETSU and asked me to take her senior portraits!
I met Renita through my photography and she has been such a blessing- a client turned friend! I’m so ecstatic for her and her new journey!
I also had some ME-time! Kayaking on the lake and adventures to the mountains to spend time with family.
Baby's first time at Roan Mountain!
You’ll see a new thing of mine- I love to take photos of the Rav on adventures!
I also got to "meet" GUY FIERI.
Downtown Flavortown in Pigeon Forge held a ribbon cutting ceremony where Guy Fieri himself attended! I had the amazing opportunity to be their “step-and-repeat” photographer for the friends and family event.
After meeting Guy, I drove back home for an engagement session in the mountains. The sunsets here are hard to beat.
Musician portraits with my friend Kristy in downtown Johnson City!
RIght before Fall season hit, I teamed up with Greenwood Oaks Farm and Venue and hosted a styled shoot!
It felt so great to have the chance to work with new vendors and to create without the stress of a wedding day! We had a blast!
Aimee and Gus kicked off my fall season with their intimate wedding in Brevard, North Carolina.
Aimee and Gus have a special place in my heart, as Aimee and I went to the same college together for photography! It was an honor to photograph their wedding.
September brought my first super rainy wedding day.
At first, I was really stressed, but it actually made for the most magical day. We used umbrellas to stay dry and made the best of it! Needless to say, my Chacos were muddy that day!
The rain let up for us just in time for Amber and Chris' ceremony!
Giving directions to the wedding party!
I always try to help if I can- even fixing little hairs here and there!
Loved working with Ashley and Dusty of Radiant Mountain Media!
A little dress shot action at the Greek Cottage at Waterstone for Darren and Lyndsey's wedding!
Helping to find the dress bustle, or something!
Working with Andrew Blevins (ABV Weddings)!
Had to crouch to get photos of the cutest little flower girls!
Lyndsey and Darren's ceremony had us all in tears and laughter!
More wedding party directions...
... and them taking their jobs very seriously!
Sometimes I'm on boutonniere duty!
One of my favorite spots for bride and groom portraits at the Waterstone!
Fun at the reception! Always breaking out the dance moves!
Darren and Lyndsey were such a special couple!
Needless to say, I had a blast capturing their day!
And I met Darren's boss- pro golfer Scott Stallings!
At the end of September, we took a much needed vacation to the beach! We love the North Carolina shores!
Snuck in some branding at Blue Mountanya while the fall colors were peaking!
And had a few fall adventures on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Fall season continued on through to November! I traveled to my home state of Maryland for Emma and Justin's wedding!
I stayed at the cutest renovated motel called The Quarters at Pier 450. It was a few minutes down the road from their venue which made it the perfect place to stay the night before.
